Day 2 - Formosa Chang

Before entering Formosa Chang, we were greeted by a welcome note from the Company which made me feel that Taiwanese are so 亲切 and 热情.

At Formosa Chang, we were honoured to have the CEO of the established F&B brand to give us a briefing on the company's profile.

Formosa Chang started in the year 1960 from a roadside stall to a total of 52 outlets now. Mr Chang, who is the CEO of the brand, gave an inspiring speech and also brought us through the process of how he transformed the company to today's success.

Mr Chang told us that if we want to succeed, we must be prepared to meet obstacles during the process. He did not mind sharing with us all his knowledge and skills, as he would like to see the service standard increases throughout everywhere. Mr Chang advised us to take small steps at a time in order to succeed, which can be shown in his future corporate goals whereby he aims to open 2 more outlets this year.

Mr Chang is a man with visions and crisis management skills. For example, in the year of many Hand, Foot and Mouth disease cases, pigs were infected which affected Mr Chang's business. He put his crisis management skills into good use by coming up with Chicken Rice to replace the Minced Pork Rice. He also came up with strategic marketing plans to ensure that the new innovated dish sold well in the market during crisis time. And indeed, it worked and results could be seen in the long run.

Till now, Mr Chang has developed 2377 books of standard of procedures (SOPs) as these SOPs have to be edited and revised to suit current situations and status of the company.

Mr Chang mentioned that employees must be taken care of first before taking care of the society. By doing so, stakeholders will have confidence in the company. Hence, employee stocks can be seen in the company's system. Formosa Chang also encourages corporate social responsibilities (CSR) activities such as providing donation boxes for customers to donate money to the needy and also engaging in CSR programs.

Formosa Chang also cooperates with China Airlines by providing the company's signature dishes to travelers in the Business and First class and also the VIP rooms. Such strategy links to the company’s vision of selling Formosa Minced Pork Rice to the world. I feel that this is a good move that my Company can consider, possibly cooperate with Japan Airlines, so that our brand can be slowly made-known worldwide.

Formosa Chang is indeed one of the best companies to learn from as it proves that a roadside stall can be transformed into a successful chain which is going worldwide with its brand. The branding strategies in Formosa Chang are successful as whoever thinks of Minced Pork Rice, they will think of Formosa Chang, which is also known as the Share of Mind branding strategy.
